This is a variation of the Jacoby 2 No Trump used in limit raises. This variation is played in Sweden and has gained some popularity. The year of the origin of Swedish Jacoby 2 No Trump is unknown, but according to Mr. Stefan Zylberstein in an email dated: Friday, February 14, 2003, the Stenberg convention is named for the Swedish master and theoretician Mr. Alvar Stenberg, who introduced the Stenberg convention into the praxis of Sweden's bridge community.

Note: Mr. Hans-Olof Hallén released an article to the press in Sweden than Mr. Alvar Stenberg died on September 29, 2006. He was born in the year 1927. This article can be found on the Internet. This press article has also only been preserved and archived on this site in .pdf file format for future reference.

Note: Mr. Henrik Johansson of Uppsala, Sweden, confirms the following outline of the Swedish Jacoby Two No Tump conventional method with continuations at this online source.

Note: The online posting of Mr. Miles Mohlrich of Seattle, Washington, United States, in the groups.google.com July 17, 1993, varies only in minor instances from the information provided below. He includes also as an additional feature the bid in both Major suits to show minimum hand, no shortage, at most 2 controls. This information has also only been preserved and archived on this site in .pdf file format for future reference.

It is also the contention of Mr. Stefan Zylberstein that the Stenberg convention and the Swedish Jacoby 2 No Trump convention are the same conventional methods of game-forcing responses and showing trump support. The Stenberg convention is a variation or a different version of the Swedish Jacoby 2 No Trump, which is generally the mostly employed convention.

The following chart provides the responses of the responder and the rebids of the opener:

North   South   Meaning
1 any Major   2 NT   Swedish Jacoby 2 No Trump
3       Indicates a minimum opening.
3       Promises extra values with no singleton.
3       Promises extra values with no Club singleton.
3       Promises extra values with no Diamond singleton.
3 NT       Promises extra values with a singleton in the unbid Major suit.
4       Promises extra values and a void; also viewed as a splinter bid.
4       Promises extra values and a void; also viewed as a splinter bid.
4 other Major       Promises a void in the unbid Major suit.

The bidding process becomes clear after such descriptive responses and the opener and the responder can both bid accordingly as illustrated in the following example.

North   South   Meaning
1 any Major   2 NT   Swedish Jacoby 2 No Trump
3       Indicates a minimum opening.
3 bid Major   This is a sign-off bid by the responder. Partner must pass except when holding additional game of slam values.
3   This is an asking bid for any singleton.
3   This is a cuebid, but only in the opening bid is Spades.
3   This is a cuebid, but only in the opening bid is Hearts.

If the bidding sequence is as follows, then the rebids by the opener are indicated in the following chart:

North   South   Meaning
1 any Major   2 NT   Swedish Jacoby 2 No Trump
3       Indicates a minimum opening.
3   This is an asking bid for any singleton.
3       Promises a singleton Club.
3       Promises a singleton Diamond.
3 NT       Promises a singleton in the unbid Major suit.
4       Indicates no singleton and is a cuebid of Diamonds.
4       Indicates no singleton in any suit; cuebid not possible.

If the partnership agreement is such that these responses are employed, then the first response of 2 No Tump can be applies even on invitational values. As a consequence the bidding sequence 1 Major - 3 Major becomes preemptive in nature.
