The origin of this variation of the Swiss conventional method is unknown but demands the same requirements and follows the same guidelines as the original convention. Please review the Swiss convention first, otherwise the Super Swiss conventional method will have no independent meaning.

Note: This conventional expansion to the original Swiss conventional method was recommended by Mr. Hugh W. Kelsey, although it cannot be substantiated that he is the author of the concept.

Concept

The concept is different in the meaning of the game-forcing bid by the responder in as much as the bid of the responder can inform the partner immediately whether or not he has:

1. A Singleton.
2. A Void.

And if the responder has neither a singleton nor a void, then the bid by the responder can show whether or not he has good controls.

In this variation, the responder bids one of four steps to reach the desired contract. Please review the Swiss convention first, otherwise the Super Swiss convention will make no sense. The first step for the responder is to bid one above a single jump raise. Each of these four steps carries information about the holding of the responder and distribution of the hand.

The concept is based on the fact that a singleton and/or a void, or the lack thereof, can be immediately communicated by the responder by means of four steps. The first step is to jump bid one step higher than the suit bid by partner.

Opening is 1 Heart

3 :

Promises an unspecified void. (Note: the relay bid by partner of 3 No Trump inquires about the location of the void.)

3 NT:

Promises an unspecified singleton. (Note: the relay bid by partner of 4 Clubs inquires about the location of the singleton.)

4 :

Promises two or three Aces, no Singleton and no void.

4 :

Shows fewer than two Aces, no Singleton and no Void.

Opening is 1 Spade

3 NT:

Promises an unspecified void. (Note: the relay bid by partner of 4 Clubs inquires about the location of the void.)

4 :

Promises an unspecified singleton. (Note: the relay bid by partner of 4 Diamonds inquires about the location of the void.)

4 :

Promises two or three Aces, no Singleton and no void.

4 :

Shows fewer than two Aces, no Singleton and no Void.

In the case that the responder shows a void-showing raise, the opener will use the relay bid, or the cheapest possible bid, to discover the location of the void. The responder then bids the suit in which he is void, if it is possible without passing game, 4 Hearts or 4 Spades, in the Major suit. If it is not possible, then the responder will bid four of the Major Suit to show that he is void in the next higher ranking suit.

Note: This response method keeps the bidding level below the level of a game contract and allows the partnership to communicate within this bidding space sufficient information as to whether an attempt for a slam try is feasible.

Note: Examples are not included since the concept is self-explanatory.

Additional Notes

The Super Swiss conventional method is also applied by bridge players who employ Limit Raises. This variation needs practice on the part of the partnership. It requires that both partners understand to the fullest the significance of the bids made by the responder.

If you wish to include this feature, or any other feature, of the game of bridge in your partnership agreement, then please make certain that the concept is understood by both partners. Be aware whether or not the feature is alertable or not and whether an announcement should or must be made. Check with the governing body and/or the bridge district and/or the bridge unit prior to the game to establish the guidelines applied. Please include the particular feature on your convention card in order that your opponents are also aware of this feature during the bidding process, since this information must be made known to them according to the Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge. We do not always include the procedure regarding Alerts and/or Announcements, since these regulations are changed and revised during time by the governing body. It is our intention only to present the information as concisely and as accurately as possible.
