The origin of this concept is unknown. The guidelines and the requirements are the same
as for the Swiss
conventional method. This means that the responder
has opening values and a 4-card fit in the Major suit opening of his partner. This
variation of the Swiss conventional method is relatively easy to remember. The parameters of the concept demand that the cards of the responder
must have a definite distribution, otherwise the bid can not be made.
The Singleton Swiss method is also incorporated into the partnership agreement
by the bridge players, who agree to employ limit raises. The response is generally limited to a Major suit opening. If the partnership wishes to apply this concept also to any Minor suit opening, then this becomes and individual partnership understanding.
If the first response is 4 Clubs
If the first response to a Major suit opening by the responder is 4 Clubs, then the responder communicates the following information to partner.

In order to discover the location of the singleton the opener bids a 4 Diamonds, which inquires as to the location of the singleton.
If the first response is 4 Diamonds
If the first response to a Major suit opening by the responder is 4 Clubs, then the responder communicates the following information to partner.
