The origin of this conventional method is credited to Mr. Adam Meyerson of Los Angeles, California, United States. The concept was devised as a solution for the requirements of the ACBL in regards to the General Convention Chart, which disallowed the Woolsey conventional method, developed by Mr. Kit Woolsey, and the Robinson conventional method, developed by Mr. Steve Robinson. The Meyerson conventional method serves as an alternative to these two conventional methods and has a few similarities.

The Meyerson conventional defense method is employed as a defense method after an opponent opens the auction with 1 No Trump. The conventional defense method may be employed against a strong No Trump or against a weak No Trump opening, and may be used in either the direct seat or in the balancing position

As with all defense methods and concepts against the opening of a No Trump by the opponents the decisive factor is the distribution of the holding combined with the state of the vulnerability.

Note: As with many defense methods against a 1 No Trump opening bid the defense method is based more on distributional strength than on points.

The following outlines the meanings of these overcalls following a 1 No Trump opening by opponent. They are the same guidelines for competing in fourth seat following two passes.

Double: Shows at least a 4-card Major suit and at least a 4-card suit in a Minor suit. The main feature of the double is that it shows a two-suited holding with at least a total of 9 cards in both suits. Therefore the distribution can be either 5M-4m or 4M-5m plus.
  Continuations by the Advancer
2 : The advancer, with support in Clubs, may bid Clubs with the intention of either asking partner to bid his longer suit or to pass, if Clubs is the Minor suit.
2 : With little or no support in Clubs or Diamonds the advancer bids 2 Diamonds only with the intention of asking partner to identify the Major suit.
Optional: Note: The advancer can make any other bid besides 2 Clubs or 2 Diamonds, which expressly communicate information. Once the advancer decides to bid independently, then the bid suit shows at least a 6-card plus suit either on the two level (either Hearts or Spades) or a 6-card suit on the three level (Clubs and Diamonds) with the corresponding additional values or distribution.
2 : Promises at least two 4-card Major suits.
2 : Promises generally a 6-card plus Diamond suit. Natural.
2 : Promises generally a 6-card plus Heart suit. Natural.
2 : Promises generally a 6-card plus Spade suit. Natural
2 NT+: Bids of 2 No Trump or higher are not addressed and the individual partnership can assign these idle bids any meaning.

As soon as the overcaller has clarified the holding either as a one-suited holding or a two-suited holding, then all continuances are per partnership agreement. The advancer has the responsibility, as captain, to lead partner to the best partscore or game contract.

If you wish to include this feature, or any other feature, of the game of bridge in your partnership agreement, then please make certain that the concept is understood by both partners. Be aware whether or not the feature is alertable or not and whether an announcement should or must be made. Check with the governing body and/or the bridge district and/or the bridge unit prior to the game to establish the guidelines applied. Please include the particular feature on your convention card in order that your opponents are also aware of this feature during the bidding process, since this information must be made known to them according to the Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge. We do not always include the procedure regarding Alerts and/or Announcements, since these regulations are changed and revised during time by the governing body. It is our intention only to present the information as concisely and as accurately as possible.
