The exact origin of this conventional method is unknown, only that it began presumably in The Netherlands. Once the concept of the Texas Transfer Bids had been originated, several variations formed. One of these variations on the concept is the Dutch Texas Transfer Bids, which are illustrated and clarified below.

Basic Principle of the Concept

This variation was devised so that the responder, who held either one or more tenaces, would become the declarer as opposed to the partner, who bid No Trump. In this manner a favorable lead up to the tenace would provide an additional, perhaps undeserved trick. These transfer bids may also be used over competition if and when the competition does not interfere with the employment thereof.

1 NT	Pass	4		This is a transfer to Diamonds. The responder will then set the contract in the desired Major suit, either Hearts or Spades, and becomes declarer.
		4		The identical transfer bid to Hearts as with the original concept of Texas Transfer bids.
		4		The identical transfer bid to Spades as with the original concept of Texas Transfer bids.

An example follows to illustrate the effectiveness of the Diamond transfer bid:

		Pass		4				The responder becomes the declarer. This decision by the responder is dependent upon the two tenaces held by the responder: AQ and KJ. Otherwise the responder would just bid 4 and transfer partner to Hearts to declare.

Be aware whether or not the feature is alertable or not and whether an announcement should or must be made. Check with the governing body and/or the bridge district and/or the bridge unit prior to the game to establish the guidelines applied. Please include the particular feature on your convention card in order that your opponents are also aware of this feature during the bidding process, since this information must be made known to them according to the Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge.
