Bridge Conventions

The originator of this Drury-style conventional method remains unknown. This method or variation of the concept allows both partners to communicate information about their holdings. According to the parameters of the concept this method is more adapted to the parameters of opening 4-card Major suits and especially if the holding contains a singleton, which would prompt the partnership to more actively seek game. (Note: including a void equals an individual partnership agreement). ML.

Concept of this Version

Following an opening of a Major suit in third or fourth seat the responder, without interference, bids as described below:

2 : Promises, as a passed hand, a limit raise with values of at least 10 high card points in addition to at least a 3-card plus support for partner's Major suit.

2 NT: Denies any support for partner's Major suit, but promises a 5-card Club suit and at least 10 high card points.

3 : Promises a 6-card Club suit and at least 10 high card points.

Once this information has been communicated to the opener, then the opener, in return, describes the nature of the opening Major suit bid in third seat in the following manner:

2 : This rebid communicates no information about the held Diamond suit, but rather informs the responder that the bid is first artificial, and also that the Major suit bid was made with only a 4-card suit. (Note: if the original suit was Spades and the responder holds a 5-card Heart suit plus the required 10 high card points, then the responder first bids 2, after which the opener either passes with 3-card support in Hearts or corrects to 2.

2 Major: By rebidding the original Major suit the opener in third seat promises a 5-card suit in the named Major.

Splinter: Once the opener discovers that an 8-card fit has been found, then the opener can bid a new suit to show a splinter (either a singleton or void) in the bid suit. This action can only be valid if the opener has more than opening values such as 15 plus high card points and excellent distribution for ruffing power. (Note: there is one exception, which the partnership should observe, and that is namely when the opener rebids 2 after a 1 opening, then the responder must jump to 3 in order to show shortness in Hearts.

Additional Responses

Besides any of the response from either player, as described above, there are additional rebids by the opener in third seat available to communicate information about the nature of the holding. These are described below.

2 NT: Promises 12-14 high card points and stoppers in at least two side suits. This rebid is natural and also non-forcing. The responder may pass. Note that any continuation by the responder is non-forcing. For example, the responder may return to the original Major suit by bidding 3 of the Major suit. However, if the responder bids a new suit on the three level, then, by agreement, this rebid shows a singleton or void in the bid suit, and also invites game. The opener, having this additional information, reevaluates the holding, considers the ruffing power, and places the final contract.

3 NT: The opener can also rebid game in No Trump and completely disregard the found 8-card Major suit fit. This rebid shows extra values of 17-18 (bad 19) high card points, and all suits stopped by at least one stopper in each of the suits.

New Suit: By re-bidding a new suit at a minimum level except Diamonds (3), then the agreement is that this rebid is natural and forcing for only one round. The responder must respond.

Jump: Any jump rebid in a new suit, again except Diamonds, then this promises either a singleton or void (splinter) in the bid suit.

Jump: Any jump rebid of the original Major suit is forcing and shows slam interest.

Jump: Any jump to game, or to the four-level, in the original Major suit requests the responder to either sign off by passing, and shows absolutely no slam interest.

Interference

Any competitive overcalls, including doubles, are a matter of individual partnership agreement.

If you wish to include this feature, or any other feature, of the game of bridge in your partnership agreement, then please make certain that the concept is understood by both partners. Be aware whether or not the feature is alertable or not and whether an announcement should or must be made. Check with the governing body and/or the bridge district and/or the bridge unit prior to the game to establish the guidelines applied. Please include the particular feature on your convention card in order that your opponents are also aware of this feature during the bidding process, since this information must be made known to them according to the Laws of Duplicate Contract Bridge. We do not always include the procedure regarding Alerts and/or Announcements, since these regulations are changed and revised during time by the governing body. It is our intention only to present the information as concisely and as accurately as possible.
