This extension of the Swiss convention response method was designed to allow the responder to make a forcing raise of a Major suit opening. The partner is not permitted by partnership agreement to pass this forcing bid.
The responder makes a first response to the Major suit opening by partner, which can convey any of the following meanings:
1. |
A singleton in an unspecified suit. |
2. |
Above average high card strength. |
3. |
Above average trump support. |
4. |
General strength. |
Using the bids just above a jump raise, (example: 3
over 1
or example: 3 NT over 1
), the responder bids as follows in steps:
First Step: |
Shows an unspecified singleton. |
Second Step: |
Shows 17-18 high card points. |
Third Step: |
Shows 4-card Trump support with at least 2 of the top 3 honors, or more than 4-card Trump support with at least the Ace and King. |
Fourth Step: |
Shows any hand worth a strong raise that does fulfill any of the above. |
The opener can ask for the suit of the singleton, if the responder has shown a singleton by making the cheapest bid possible. The responder bids the suit of his singleton, if he does not exceed the four level past the trump suit. Otherwise, the responder simply bids four of the trump suit.
