This concept originated with Mr. Michael Cappelletti, born in the year 1942 of Alexandria, Virginia, United States. He as served on the ACBL Board of Governors, on the National Appeals Committe, and was President of the Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference and also the Washington Bridge League.

The logic behind the devised concept is to communicate a certain type of holding with a particular pattern, but with a different and defined length in the two suits indicated.

The following two illustrations should clarify this distinction as communicated by the cuebid. The spot cards are rather irrelevant and are neither included nor necessary for the explanation of the conventional Cappelletti cuebid.

Note: Since the strength of the holding lies in the actual distribution the relevancy of high card points becomes less important than the trick-taking ability of the holding.

Note: The Cappelletti cuebid is generally applied once the opposing players have bid two suits on the one level. However, there is no restriction placed on the competing player by the original concept not to extend the same principle in the case that the second opposing bid is on the two level. Such restrictive parameters do not exist.

Example 1: The Cappelletti cuebid shows greater strength in the lower-ranking of the two unbid suits. The ideal and minimum shape is a distribution of 5-4, but can be 6-5 or 6-4.
