This conventional method originated with Mr. William (aka Will) Aubrey, and the source for the following information is from his former website He designated these bids as Brozel Preempts because the structure is the same as the Brozel bids used over a 1 No Trump opening by the opponents. The overcaller must have a distribution of 5-5 or better with values of 13-15 points, including distribution, to employ them.

Their usage strongly suggests, but does not demand that the partnership also include a conventional method similar to Economou 2 No Trump, (also called Economou 2 Spades and Terrorist 2 NT), for preemptive bids with seven plus cards.

These preemptive opening bids and/or overcalls are not to be employed following a 1 No Trump opening by the opponent either in direct seat or in the pass-out seat. They should be employed only when opening the auction or as an overcall of a suit bid at the one level or after a suit bid opening on the two level if the preemptive jump is still possible. They may be employed in any seat.

The preemptive opening bids and/or overcalls are outlined below:

3 :	Promises Clubs and Hearts.
3 :	Promises Diamonds and Hearts.
3 :	Promises Hearts and Spades.
3 :	Promises Spades and an unspecified Minor suit, which can be discovered by the advancer relaying.

The examples below illustrate the principle behind these Brozel Preemptive bids.

Example 1

3		Brozel Preemptive opening bid. By opening with 3 Hearts North promises a two-suited holding in Hearts and Spades. Ideal point count is between 13-15 points including distribution.

The opener, South, has only 11 high card points, but with distribution added, the holding is ideal for a Brozel Preemptive opening in any seat. Based on the Losing Trick Count method, the holding is evaluated to have only 5 Losing Tricks, which is more than sufficient for an opening bid. With one preemptive bid the Brozel Preemptor has communicated not only at least 10 of his 13 cards, but also the two suits in which these cards are located.

Example 2

1				This opening bid may be made in First Seat, Second Seat, or even in Third Seat. As long as the Brozel Preemptor is able to make an overcall, then it is irrelevant in which seat the opening occurs.
		3		Brozel Preemptive bid. By overcalling with 3 Spades North promises a two-suited holding in Spades and an unspecified Minor suit. Ideal point count is between 13-15 points including distribution.
				Even if East, in this Example 2, had opened with a Weak Two bid of 2 Hearts, the Brozel Preemptor is still able to make his preemptive overcall. As long as the opening bid does not interfere with the possibility of making the preemptive bid, then the player should play systems on.

The immediate overcaller, South, has only 10 high card points, but with distribution added, especially for the void, the holding is ideal for an immediate Brozel Preemptive overcall in any seat. Based on the Losing Trick Count method, the holding is evaluated to contain only 5 Losing Tricks.

Possible Continuations

In the Example 2, the advancer (partner of the overcaller) may employ the following continuances:

3 NT:	With no support for Spades, the partnership agreement may be that the advancer asks for the unspecified Minor suit by bidding 3 NT. This is not a sign-off. The Brozel Preemptor must name the unspecified Minor suit.
4 :	With no support for Spades, the partnership agreement may be that the advancer bid the lower of the two Minor suits (not a relay) in order to discover the unspecified Minor suit. If the suit of the Brozel Preemptor is Clubs, then the correct call is pass. If the Minor Suit of the Brozel Preemptor is Diamonds, then the Brozel Preemptor corrects.
Pass:	If the advancer has support for Spades, generally a minimum of 3 cards and no game values, then the advancer may pass. A pass denies game-interest.
Game:	The advancer, after a pass by the partner of the opening bidder, may bid game based on certain favorable shapes, patterns, and distribution. Game is still a possiblity, especially if the partner of the opening bidder has passed.

				Pass				Although West has values, competing on the three level or higher is not recommended.
						3		The advancer knows that a fit in Spades is guaranteed and that the Heart suit also fits favorably. Without game values the advancer only shows a preference for the Major suit.
						Q1086 AQ K1097 AJ10		Comparison: With the holding above North has 9 Losing Tricks and therefore does not possess game values. With game values as illustrated with this example holding the advancer would bid game in the more favorable Major suit: 4 Spades. Compare and consider game possibility with only 7 Losing Tricks.
						3 NT		The advancer may also simply bid 3 No Trump when holding stoppers in the suit bid by the opener and the unbid suit. Game values are required. This holding would show no preference or fit for either Major suit.
